What is Starting Point?

Starting Point is a 8 week gathering that explores questions about faith in a conversational environment.  It’s a safe place to talk about God, Jesus, and life.  It’s a small community seeking to learn about God’s story and where our individual stories fit in.  Starting Point is a place where everyone’s opinions and beliefs are respected and valued.

There are two primary purposes for Starting Point: to help participants explore faith and experience community. Therefore, success is defined by how well participants are growing spiritually and connecting relationally. In light of these two goals, Starting Point is not a teaching forum, an apologetics course, or a class in Christian theology. Naturally those elements may take place from time to time, but at its core Starting Point is a conversational environment. Starting Point leaders are not teachers, but discussion facilitators and fellow community members on a faith journey.

Who is Starting Point designed for?

  • Seekers—those who are curious about God, Jesus, the Bible, or Christianity
  • Starters—those who have just begun a relationship with Jesus Christ
  • Returners—those who have some church experience, but have been away for a while

What is the size of a typical group?

Starting Point groups are typically ten to twelve participants and two to four leaders (for a maximum of sixteen people).

When and where do groups meet?

The entire Starting Point experience is ten weeks. Each group meeting lasts seventy-five
minutes. Primarily, groups meet either on Sundays during the service times or weeknights at one
of Starting Point leader's homes.

Please contact the church office at 515-252-1418 or email us as together@lifehousedsm.org for more information about our next Starting Point meeting date.

What do the materials include?

Each Starting Point participant will be provided high quality interactive group materials. There is suggested donation of $15 for each guide, however we do not want cost to be a barrier for anyone.

  • Conversation Guide: a full-color guide divided into ten chapters with ten audio
    messages on five CDs
  • The Starting Point Bible: an NIV version of the Scriptures with custom-written book
introductions and several Starting Point-specific articles for group members
  • Leader Notes: an essential resource to assist leaders in facilitating groups
